What Is SIMLA?
- Southern Idaho Muzzle Loaders Association INC was formed by like-minded individuals interested in promoting the use of black powder firearms and related articles (such as tomahawks, knifes, tents and lodges, traps, cooking methods and clothing) of the mountain man era, circa 1780's -1840.
- We are a family oriented club. We start children in the sport as soon as they are ready and have a number of very good shooters.
- The Club has spring through fall camp shoots the last full weekend of the month at Langford Flats in the South Hills as well as our rendezvous Memorial Day weekend (Thursday through Monday). During the winter months our shoots are located at the Jerome Rod and Gun Club on the last Saturday of the month. We also have fun shoots, such as a Turkey shoot, etc. We encourage members to dress in primitive, period correct clothing, but it is not a prerequisite for joining or participating.
- The club shoots, as well as at the rendezvous, test your skills in trail walks where you shoot both pistol and rifle at various steel and paper targets, fire starting with flint and steel, hawk and knife accuracy, trap setting, and knowledge of the era.
- During rendezvous, we have knife and hawk throwing contests, fire starting using flint and steel, primitive smooth bore and shotgun events. We have activities for children which usually include games and arts and crafts.
- SIMLA, also participates in a number of community events throughout Southern Idaho each year, such as Kimberly good neighbor days, Twin Falls, Western Days, and Buhl's Sage Brush Days. Many schools have us come in and talk to the students about this time period. We explain what the mountain man trapped, how he/she lived, where they came from, and what they ate. Basically, how they lived and survived in this great country at that time.
